6 Parts to upgrade on your Fixie ASAP

So you purchased your brand new bike from Brooklyn Fixed Gear. And although it's an amazing build, you're thinking you want to take it to the next level, right? Well, we have just the thing for you. We are going to show you 5 awesome parts to upgrade or add and take your fixed gear riding to the next level. Not only are these upgrades critical for maximum performance, but they are great for customization and expressing your uniqueness. The combinations and options might seem endless, but that's the great thing about fixed gear bikes, you can pimp out your ride to your heart's content! Without further adieu, let's get started.

Fenders

A Little rainy outside? Not a problem. A good fender can keep you going in the rain or mud! You won't have to worry about any gunk flinging up from your back wheel and messing up that new shirt of yours. This is an essential item when riding any bike because a small puddle of “who knows what” can pop out of anywhere at a moment's notice. Avoid the embarrassment and get yourself a fender. They come in many shapes and sizes but the ones we recommend are the # because of the huge amount of protection bang you get for your buck. With that said, it is unlikely that you will see many fixed gear riders with a front fender, however, you really are better off being safe than sorry. If a front fender just cramps your style too much, don't worry because you can always grab one of these nifty little ##. They are inexpensive, lightweight, and very sturdy; capable of handling any mess you throw at it.

Pure Cycles | Mini-Fenders Front & Rear $59.00

Pedals

Look, let's be honest, stock bike parts are not always “the best”. Still, that doesn't stop us from loving our fixies. We can mix, match and change any component, including the pedals. Why are the pedals so important. Well, let me tell you a little story of what happened to me a few years back. I was riding hard down a steep hill when suddenly my pedals came loose and I lost complete control. I still have the scar to prove it. You really do need a good strong pedal which is why the price is often justifiable. After my unfortunate incident, I have stayed away from the cheap stuff. Here are a couple of good ones to get you started.

Wellgo Alloy Standard Platform Pedals $21.99

Handlebars

If you are an avid cyclist, you probably have a preference of how you like to be positioned when riding. There are so many different cool and awesome ways to change up your riding style just by swapping out your handle bars. If you want to spice things up and make your fixie feel like new, try grabbing a totally different type of handlebar! You can even add some color or pizzazz to your bike by changing up the grip or tape. It's a sure fire way to totally change the look of your bike and make it new again. Your bike mostly came with riser bars, but try giving drop bars a chance or a pursuit bar if you're feeling extra adventurous. Check out some of our favorite bars and tape below.

Pure Cycles | Leather Handlebar Tape $29.00

Saddles

It goes without saying that you are going to spend a ridiculous amount of time sitting on your bike. So why not make sure it's as comfortable as possible and make it look great too? The bike seats are some of the most “swapped" out part of any bike because most bike companies expect riders to change out their stock saddles. Many fixed gear riders prefer leather saddles such as the Brooks brothers collection because of their durability, style, and comfort. Personally, I prefer comfort over form so I always go for a nice padded saddle but that's just me. Here are some super high-quality bike saddles to start your search.

Brooks | Cambium C17 Premium Saddle$159.99
Brooks | B17 Premium Leather Saddle $129.00

Wheelsets

That spanking new fixie is only going to go as far as its wheels will allow it.  Not only is grabbing a new wheel set a great investment to the longevity and overall performance of your bike, but it's also an amazing way to get in some color to your ride. Some of the wheels on the market look amazing, especially the Deep V rims which are often double walled and super thick for durability. Maybe you want to upgrade those flimsy wire spoke wheels that came stock with your bike? Encore makes some amazing, super light carbon fiber, and aluminum wheelsets with disc brake compatibility. Chain

The chain is without a doubt a major component of your bike, It's literally the driving force of all the moving parts! If it breaks or is damaged in anyway, you could be in for a world of hurt! Don't let that happen to you. Check your chain frequently and if they look old, make sure you replace with a new one. While you're at it, use the opportunity to get a chain with a color you like! Many bike chains come in an array of different colors which only add to your customization abilities. It goes without saying that we only recommend a chain from a quality manufacturer.
